Behind the Bond: My Approach to Lash Adhesive & Curing

There is a lot more happening behind a beautiful lash set than what meets the eye. The adhesive, its formulation and freshness, the studio environment, curing speed, isolation technique, and the experience of the lash artist all influence the final result. As a seasoned lash professional, I have spent years learning how these factors work together, and I am very intentional about the products and techniques I choose to use.

One technology I have researched extensively but ultimately chosen not to incorporate into my services is UV-LED lash curing. This isn’t because I believe UV-LED curing systems are inherently dangerous or that other professionals shouldn’t use them. There are legitimate benefits to this technology, and I believe every lash artist should make the decision that is appropriate for their technique, training, and clientele. For me, however, a traditional fast-curing adhesive remains the better fit.

Fast Curing Without a Curing Lamp

UV-LED lash systems use specially formulated adhesive that cures when activated by a specific wavelength of light. One advantage is that the adhesive can remain workable until the technician intentionally activates it, providing a very predictable curing point. For some lash artists, that can be extremely useful. But after many years of performing lash extensions, I have developed the speed, precision, isolation, and adhesive control necessary to work effectively with conventional fast-curing adhesive.

I use a professional-grade, low-fume, fast-curing adhesive selected specifically for my technique and working environment. I maintain a controlled studio environment within the adhesive manufacturer’s recommended temperature and humidity parameters because environmental conditions directly influence curing. I also prioritize adhesive manufactured in small batches, allowing me to focus on freshness, consistency, and predictable performance. This helps guests have a more comfortable experience, minimizing the time exposed to adhesive vapors, and providing exceptinal lash retention. 

Many high-quality professional fast-curing adhesives can cure in approximately 1–2 seconds when used under the appropriate conditions. UV-LED lash curing lamps, depending on the manufacturer and system, can have curing times ranging from approximately 1–5 seconds. For an experienced lash artist who can isolate and place an extension within the adhesive’s working time, I don’t feel a curing lamp provides a meaningful advantage. Simply put, I don’t need a curing lamp to make my adhesive fast. My technique allows me to work within the adhesive’s intended curing window while maintaining precision and control.

UV-LED Curing & Retention

UV-LED curing does not inherently make lash extensions last longer because curing the adhesive faster does not create a stronger or more durable bond. Lash extensions grow out with the natural lash, so extensions that have grown out extensively should be removed and replaced during an infill. Continuing a set beyond three weeks is not recommended, as excessive grow-out can place unnecessary weight and leverage on the natural lash and increase risk of damage. Retention is determined by the quality of the adhesive, proper application and isolation, natural lash growth, and client aftercare. 

UV-LED Curing & Sensitivities

UV-LED curing does not eliminate exposure to lash adhesive fumes or prevent sensitivities. The adhesive still contains cyanoacrylate, which releases vapors during application. While UV-LED curing can accelerate the curing process, it does not make the adhesive fume-free or eliminate the possibility of irritation or allergic reactions.

Why I Take a Conservative Approach to UV-LED Around the Eyes

The other factor I consider is where UV-LED curing takes place: extremely close to the eyes.

Ultraviolet radiation is biologically active, and we know that UV exposure can affect the skin and eyes depending on wavelength, intensity, duration, distance, and cumulative exposure. That does not mean UV-LED lash curing systems have been proven to cause eye damage. I want to make that distinction very clear. These systems are specifically designed for lash applications, and manufacturers may conduct safety testing on their individual devices. However, long-term research specifically evaluating repeated UV exposure from lash-curing systems around the eyes is still limited. To me, that matters.

There is a difference between “there is no evidence that this causes harm” and “we have extensive long-term evidence demonstrating that repeated exposure is completely safe.” The latter has not yet been established to the degree that would make me personally comfortable introducing UV exposure into a service when I can achieve excellent results without it.

Lash extensions are also a recurring service. Guests may receive infills every two to three weeks, meaning any exposure associated with the procedure could potentially be repeated many times over years. Because I already have a reliable alternative, I personally prefer the more conservative approach.

Technology Has a Place, It Just Has to Make Sense

I am someone who loves new technology. When new products, techniques, or innovations enter the beauty industry, I get excited to research them. I like understanding how they work, studying the science behind them, testing whether they can improve my services, and determining whether they are genuinely a good fit for my business.

UV-LED curing technology is simply one innovation that, after researching and evaluating it, I have decided isn’t the right fit for me. For my particular technique, experience level, controlled studio environment, and fast-curing adhesive, I can already achieve the speed and performance I want. I don’t feel the additional technology provides enough benefit to outweigh my personal preference to avoid introducing an additional UV light source around the eyes when it isn’t necessary for my work. That doesn’t mean another talented lash artist can’t use it successfully. It simply means that every technology doesn’t have to earn a permanent place in every studio.

What Premium Lash Artistry Means To Me

Premium lash artistry is about much more than how quickly an adhesive cures. It is about selecting quality products, understanding how they perform, maintaining the proper environment, mastering isolation and placement, choosing the appropriate lash weight and diameter, and customizing every set to the individual guest. My goal is to create extensions that are beautiful, lightweight, comfortable, properly bonded, and long-lasting, while being thoughtful about the products and techniques used around the delicate eye area.

As a lash artist in Raleigh, I believe my guests deserve to know not only what I use, but why I use it. New technology can be wonderful. Sometimes innovation means adopting something new. Other times, it means having enough knowledge and experience to recognize that the system you already use is performing exceptionally well.

For me, that is exactly where I am with UV-LED lash curing. Every product, technique, and technology I choose has to earn its place, and every choice is made with intention.
